On Sunday the 18th April, Brighton saw its first ever city Marathon taking place throughout the city centre and around stretches of coastal road around the scenic South Downs. Organised by former Olympic runner Tim Hutchings, and supported by Active Network registration system and a few company volunteers on the day, the Brighton Marathon was a resounding success. With nil traffic problems and hospital treatments kept to a surprising minimum of 3 cases only, the 7,589 runners made their way around the city amongst ecstatic cheers of the crowd in a virtually problem-free race. Facing the unusual circumstances of the Europe-wide ban on flights affecting marathons abroad, Brighton's race director accepted 50 late entry requests for those who were meant to be running at the Boston Marathon on the following Monday and the Vienna Marathon on that Sunday and, who happily participated in the Brighton Marathon instead. Ellen Manning, from the Active Network team, who was deeply involved in the set up of Brighton Marathon's online registration system, was also an avid participant on event day and comments: "I had an absolutely brilliant time participating in the inaugural Brighton Marathon! What a fantastic event it turned out to be. The course was great (minus the hills!) and the crowd was fantastic keeping me going all the way. I feel grateful and honoured that I was able to not only help putting the event together, but actually to participate as well." After all the hard work to ensure the 2010 race would take place smoothly, Tim Hutchings and the team are already preparing 2011's edition and the registrations for next year's event will go live on the 7th May.
